96% of Shanghai's supply said to meet nation's standard

The quality of Shanghai's tap water is good, the city's water authority said yesterday, claiming that more than 96 percent of the city's supply met the country's standard.

Since Shanghai switched its major water resource last year to the Qingcaosha Reservoir that takes water from the center of the Yangtze River, the quality of water had improved in most parts of the city, the authority said.

Qingcaosha supplies eight water plants with 5.5 million cubic meters each day, covering nearly half the city's population.

Meanwhile, as some water plants still depend on water from the Huangpu River, the authority said they had been setting up deep purifying technology in those plants to ensure water quality.

It said that the water from the city's water plants was drinkable but would deteriorate as it passed through the aged pipe network.

The government is investing 500 million yuan (US$79 million) a year to renovate the city's 30,000 kilometers of pipelines.
