High bar for language at first Sino-US university

New York University Shanghai, the first Sino-US joint higher education institute, will have a high requirement for language skills, as English will be the language of instruction.

Non-native English speakers will need to provide an English language proficiency certificate when the university starts to admit students next year.

Whether it's IELTS, TOFEL or Chinese College Entrance Exam's English test score is still under discussion, the university officials said.

"Every future student, you should be able to speak some Shanghai Dialect, apart from English," the university's official Sina microblog joked.

NYU Shanghai's campus will be built in downtown Lujiazui area in 2014. The future students will be able to spend one to three semesters at NYU's 10-plus campuses or overseas study centers in New York, Abu Dhabi and other countries, the university announced yesterday.

"We will have faculty and students coming from around the world," said Yu Lizhong, chancellor of NYU Shanghai and president of East China Normal University, the Chinese partner of the joint institute.

"NYU Shanghai will be a multilingual, multiethnic and multicultural international university," he said.

About 200 NYU teachers and 100 international scholars, including Nobel Prize laureates, have expressed their interest in teaching at NYU Shanghai, according to the university.

Jeffrey Lehman, previous president of Cornell University and the founding dean of the Peking University School of Transnational Law, will be the university's vice chancellor.

The international recruitment of teachers will be kicked off in the second half of the year while the recruitment of some administration staff, including office assistants and translators, is ongoing.

Chinese students will slightly outnumber their foreign peers in NYU Shanghai's first incoming class, officials said. Chinese mainland students will account for 51 percent while international students will account for 49 percent.

The mainland students have to take the national college entrance exam, which will be a major reference for the university to choose students. International students will be recruited through the admissions system of NYU.

The university plans to admit 300 undergraduate students for the first semester. It plans to set up seven majors including physical science, mathematics and engineering.

The admission and curriculum details of NYU Shanghai are still being finalized, and will be announced in the second half of the year.
