TWO education company officials have been detained for leaking English test answers to students taking part in January's National Graduate Entrance Exams.

Chen Liangwei and Li Jiahui, who headed the Changsha and Guangzhou branches of the Beijing-based Qihang Education Group, were accused of leaking the answers to those who paid for Qihang's training courses, the China Youth Daily reported today.

The answers were sent by short text messages to tens of thousands of students sitting for the exam in the cities of Guangzhou, Changsha, Wuhan, Beijing and Taiyuan, an unnamed source with the Guangzhou police said.

However, Qihang denied that Chen and Li were its employees and said they ran the training centers as a Qihang franchise, the report said.

The Ministry of Education has checked all the English test papers of more than 1.5 million test takers and will require some of them to take a new test, said Yuan Guiren, an official with the ministry.

"We will disqualify them for admission if they are proven to have participated in the fraud," Yuan said.
