(Ecns.cn)--A gang of tomb raiders were arrested recently in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province for allegedly robbing two ancient graves by digging a secret tunnel.

The tunnel, about 41 meters in length, 1.06 meters in width, and 1.18 meters in height, starts from the house of Li Qiang (alias),one of the suspects, who lives quite near one of the tombs in Yaoji Village, Suining Township.

Sometimes when they came across an underground rock or hardpan, they would either drill through it or explode it. By doing the latter, they usually first made a hole in the rock with an electric drill and then filled it with a self-made explosive, which was wrapped with condoms.

After getting tip-off from the public, the local police seized 14 suspects, including Li Qiang, on July 15. Two are still on the run.

According to an archeologist in 2002, the two graves may belong to kings of the Pi Guo, a kingdom dating back to more than three thousand years ago. They are also key cultural relics under provincial protection.
