(Ecns.cn)--The first sperm bank in northwest China opened Tuesday in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province. So far, the bank has over 400 sperm samples, 99% of which are from college student volunteers.

All donors are required to give personal information on various aspects, including skin color, height, face shape, eyelid structure, blood type, and whether or not they are left-handed.

According to Zhang Zhou, director of the bank, many donors are worried about their privacy and possible intermarriage of the offspring.

Zhang added that "the donors' personal information will be kept strictly confidential."

The Ministry of Health has enacted laws to avoid intermarriage. A donor can only give his sperm to only one bank in China, which in turn, can be provided to five women at most. The sperm sample will be destroyed once it reaches the limit.

All donors sign a document giving up all rights to know anything about where their sperm goes. They have no responsibility or rights regarding the offspring either.

Zhang said each donor gives 3-4 ml sperm each time and donates 6-10 times in total.
