(Ecns.cn)--On Sunday evening, a banquet for 1,080 elderly across the country, the youngest being 60 years old and the oldest 107, was held in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province.

"China is paying more attention now to the lives of elderly people," said Li Wu, 67, an overseas Chinese from Japan.

107-year-old Chen Ziqi was the oldest participant. Chen, born in 1905, was a little hard of hearing, but still quite hale and hearty. According to his daughter, he was a senior military officer of the Kuomintang, and fought in the War of Resistance Against Japan.

Organizers also invited the best chefs in a bid to prepare safe and healthy food for the guests.

The "Feast for 1,000 Elderly" first began as a grand royal banquet back in the Qing Dynasty, when Emperor Kangxi hosted more than 3,000 elderly people to show respect to them.
