(Ecns.cn)--The book entitled "Steps to Growing Up" that was recently reported as the first textbook on sex education for primary school students is actually a periodic project for a draft sex education outline, according to a spokesman with the Beijing Municipal Education Commission Tuesday.

This book is not expected to be given out to students and their parents, and currently the municipal government has no plan to compile a textbook on sex education, said the Education Commission.

The book was based on research conducted at a local elementary school and was jointly compiled by a local governmental sex education association and Beijing Capital Normal University.

Previously reported as China's first textbook on sex education, the book has sparked heated discussion among parents and some experts, saying that some content included in the book is too pornographic.

Publishing a textbook for young students needs a long compiling and verifying process, and experts are still doing research on whether to launch the outline, said the spokesman.

Sex education is a very important part of growing up for primary and secondary students, and the government takes a prudent attitude towards books on the topic, added the spokesman.
