(Ecns.cn) – A grape eating competition was held for people over 70 years old at a vineyard in Pengshan County of southwest China's Sichuan Province on August 19.

Venerable old men and women tried to outdo each other by wolfing down grapes after removing the skins.

In Pengshan County, grape orchards cover over 860 hectares. The vineyard at Guangyin Town stands out with a growing area of 330 hectares; every year it yields more than 5,000 tons of grapes and earns up to 100 million yuan ($15.5 million).

This year, in order to promote sales and increase its workers' income, Pengshan County held the grape eating competition. The competition was divided into several groups, but the one involving seniors sparked the most interest from the crowds.

One grandmother named Mao Xueqin was accompanied by a young boy who helped her remove the grape skins. She said the activity was a lot of fun.

A man named Dai Shiming won the competition and was awarded with a mobile phone. He was quite happy, and hoped that the elderly would get more opportunities to participate in such activities, which made them feel energetic again.
