The death toll has risen to 29 following a hospital fire in southern Beijing's Fengtai District on Tuesday, according to the district authorities at a news briefing on Wednesday.
Twenty-six of those who died were hospital patients, deputy head of Fengtai District Li Zongrong said.
A preliminary investigation showed that the fire was caused by flammable painting materials, which were ignited by sparks produced during the renovation of the inpatient department, according to an official from the fire department.
Twelve people suspected of major liability have been criminally detained so far, while further investigation is underway.
