A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday that the United States' decision to hike tariffs on Chinese imports over the fentanyl issue is "unjustified and will do no one good", urging the U.S. to respect facts, consider its own interests and make the right choice.

The remarks followed the release of a white paper on Tuesday titled "Controlling Fentanyl-Related Substances—China's Contribution", which provides an authoritative review of the tremendous work China has done, the innovative steps it has taken and its experiences in controlling fentanyl-related substances.

The spokesperson said a statement released on the ministry's website emphasized that China has always fulfilled its international drug control obligations and actively participates in global counternarcotics efforts.

The statement also highlighted China's commitment to advancing global drug control governance and working alongside other countries to tackle the new challenges posed by the fentanyl issue.

"What has been achieved is there for all to see," the spokesperson said, criticizing Washington for spreading false information on the fentanyl issue, smearing and scapegoating China over the matter.

"China's position is clear-cut. We stand ready for practical cooperation with the U.S. based on equality and mutual respect. That said, we firmly oppose the U.S. pressuring, threatening and blackmailing China under the pretext of the fentanyl issue," the spokesperson said.
