China on Friday announced that it had filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the U.S.'s slapping of "reciprocal tariffs" on its trading partners.

In a statement, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said the "reciprocal tariffs" imposed by the U.S. is a serious violation of WTO rules, seriously undermines the legitimate rights and interests of WTO members and seriously undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system and the international economic and trade order.

It is a typical unilateral hegemonic practice that jeopardizes the stability of the global economic and trade order, the ministry stressed, and voiced China's firm opposition against the U.S. move.

The statement read that China has always been a firm defender of the international economic and trade order and a staunch supporter of the multilateral trading system.

China urged the U.S. to immediately rectify its erroneous approach and abolish its unilateral tariff measures, it added.
