(ECNS)-- The principle of "Palestinians governing Palestine" must be observed and the legitimate national rights of Palestine ensured in the post-conflict governance and reconstruction arrangement, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun at a regular press conference on Monday.
According to media reports, the recent ramping up of tensions in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict resulted in grave casualties among Palestinian civilians and mass displacement. One country after another announced recognition of the Palestinian state, including Western countries such as the UK, Canada and Australia. However, the U.S. still sells weapons to Israel while holding talks with Gulf states about an interim governing structure of post-conflict Gaza.
In response, Guo said "the two-State solution must remain the path forward, which requires more global consensus and zero unilateral action that erodes the foundation of the two-State solution."
The spokesperson addressed that bringing an early end to the conflict and achieving lasting peace are what people in Palestine, Israel, and across the Middle East want. It is also a pressing task for the international community.
"Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people and is an inseparable part of the Palestinian territory. China believes that facing the current situation, a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza must be pursued and the humanitarian catastrophe must be alleviated with utmost sense of urgency. The country with special influence on Israel needs to step up to the responsibility," he said.
Force and violence will not deliver peace and security, the spokesperson said, adding that China stands ready to work with the international community to remain committed to a ceasefire in Gaza, firmly support the Palestinian people's just cause of regaining their legitimate national rights, and make unremitting efforts toward a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the question of Palestine at an early date.
