A ceremony to launch the renovation project of Thatbyinnyu Pagoda aided by China has been held in Myanmar's Bagan, according to a release from the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar late Saturday.

Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai stressed that the cooperation of renovating pagodas would enhance cultural heritage preservation and exchange of cultural arts and strengthen the "Paukphaw" friendship, a Myanmar word for siblings, between the two countries.

According to the embassy's release, at the invitation of the Myanmar government, Chinese experts from organizations including the Shaanxi Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage visited Bagan several times, with initial plans set out for the renovation of the pagodas and temples.

The pagoda was one of nearly 400 pagodas hit by an earthquake in 2016.

In 2019, Bagan was named as a world heritage site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
