Black brick is an material for constructing ancient Chinese buildings, which holds a profound history. The Gujian brick factory, built in the reign of Emperor Daoguang (1821?1850) in North China's Hebei, has inherited traditional methods of baking black bricks. All the bricks were made manually.

The factory provides bricks for the renovations of ancient buildings in China, such as the Palace Museum, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, etc. In 2012, the black bricks baking techniques were listed as a provincial cultural heritage.
