The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) jointly issued an advisory accusing Chinese AI companies of cexecuting industrial-scale knowledge distillation campaigns against U.S. frontier models.
The allegations are unfounded and lack a legal basis. Knowledge distillation is a common, neutral practice in AI development, used by model developers worldwide, including U.S. companies. By politicizing a routine technical and commercial practice, Washington is applying a double standard.
When the U.S. does it, it is innovation; when China does it, it is theft. This is not about rules, but double standards. Washington singles out Chinese AI companies, smears legitimate technological exchanges and uses industry progress as a pretext for political containment.
No amount of black ink can obscure innovation, nor can double standards stop AI development. The magnifying glass may be trained on China, but it reveals Washington's own anxiety.
