(ECNS) -- The second cross-border railway linking Ganqimaodu port in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Gashuun Sukhait in Mongolia began construction on Wednesday. It is scheduled to open for traffic in 2027.

This is the second China-Mongolia cross-border railway built nearly 70 years after the completion of the Erenhot–Zamiin Uud railway in 1956.

Upon completion, the rail line will connect the Ganquan Railway in Inner Mongolia with Mongolia's southbound railway network, enhancing infrastructure connectivity and economic and trade exchanges between the two countries.

The new route is expected to handle 30 million metric tons of cargo each year and promote the upgrading of cross-border logistics, industrial parks, and border trade services between China and Mongolia.
