
(ECNS) -- The Fujian Provincial Government announced on Tuesday that the Chinese Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of Fuyao University of Science and Technology in the province.
Wang Shuguo, former president of Xi'an Jiaotong University, was appointed as its inaugural president.
The university, based in Fuzhou City, was initiated in May 2021 by Cao Dewang, chairman of Fuyao Group, with an founding donation of 10 billion yuan (approximately $1.38 billion) from the Guangdong Heren Charity Foundation.
Construction of the university campus that covers a total area of about 85.7 hectares officially began in May 2022 and completed by the end of 2023.
In January 2024, Fuyao University announced plans to apply for accreditation as a regular undergraduate institution, entering the review stage by the Fujian Provincial Department of Education.
The application was passed by the national Ministry of Education in January 2025.
The university is a private undergraduate institution and positioned as a new research-oriented university, according to the Ministry of Education. It will initially offer four undergraduate programs, including computer science and technology, intelligent manufacturing engineering, vehicle engineering, and materials science and engineering. It plans to enroll up to 8,000 full-time students.
