(ECNS) -- A young man from a remote mountainous area who battled poverty to achieve academic excellence has touched netizens and he told his story in his graduation paper acknowledgements.

Chen Shixin, a senior student from Nanjing University, received an admission notice for the doctorate from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a full award, and will accept further education in the field of chip automation design in August, 2022.

Chen Shixin was born in a small village in remote mountains of Daliangshan in southwest China’s Sichuan in 1999. He lived a hard life when he was young. Adults in his village went out to work for a living, including his father, so he had to help his mother with farm work to maintain their life.

In order to save living expenses, Chen Shixin had travelled 12 kilometers every day from home to school for three years when he was in junior high school. In winter, his feet were covered with frostbite.

Then he went to high school 300 kilometers away from home and only came home twice a year by bus.

Chen Shixin said that his experience as a teenager tempered his will to bear hardships and stand hard work, which enabled him to keep going forward in his education.

In 2018, the young man was enrolled in the Nanjing University, majoring integrated circuit design and integrated system.

“Chip is a key to China’s high-tech development. I hope I can solve the chip problem and make contributions to the research and development of chips of our country,” said Chen Shixin.

During his four years in college, he has won various scholarships and certificates for many times. Relying on part-time jobs and scholarships, he paid his tuition and living expenses on her own.

According to Chen, he has been financially aided by a kind person for many years and they’ve been in touch via letters.

“The kindness I received has planted the seed of being kind to others in my heart. I’d like to help others and pass on this kindness when I am able,” said Chen.

Chen Shixin said that during his college years, he coached the children in the same village many times to help them solve their learning problems. In the future, he will redouble his efforts to give back to his hometown.

"I hope that one day, I can receive attention because of my studies and achievements, rather than the frustrations and efforts in my studies," Chen said.
