U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he told Apple CEO Tim Cook that he doesn't want the U.S. tech giant to build its products in India, while saying that India is one of the countries that impose "the highest tariff" in the world, U.S. financial news outlet CNBC reported.
"I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday," Trump was quoted by CNBC as saying. "I said to him, 'my friend, I treated you very good. You're coming here with $500 billion, but now I hear you're building all over India.' I don't want you building in India."
Trump was speaking about Apple's commitment of a $500 billion investment in the U.S., which was announced in February, according to CNBC.
The U.S. president also said that India is "one of the highest tariff nations in the world," adding that the country has offered a deal to the U.S., where "they are willing to literally charge us no tariff," CNBC reported.
As of press time on Thursday, neither Apple nor Cook has publicly responded to the U.S. president's remarks, according to U.S. media.
Citing unnamed Indian government sources, Indian news outlet CNBC-TV18 reported on Thursday that Apple has "assured the Indian government" of its continued commitment to using India as a major base for manufacturing its products.
