Chinese tourists are now "acquitted" from earlier accusations of spraying graffiti at a Japanese national park after local police arrested a Myanmar man on Feb. 22.

Last month, some Japanese news media reported that Chinese and English graffiti saying "Happy Birthday" was found around the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Since then, Chinese tourists were blamed as most of the graffiti were in Chinese characters.

After nearly a month of investigation, a 29-year-old Myanmar man who lives in Tokyo was arrested. The man, identified as Zaw Zaw Aung, later admitted to committing the crime and said that he wanted to give his girlfriend a birthday surprise.

Following the incident, local authorities have reportedly decided to distribute leaflets to educate visitors on etiquette, according to The Mainichi, one of the major newspapers in Japan, while a ban on graffiti has also been introduced at the park.
