Popular Chinese messaging app WeChat announced Wednesday it would shut down public accounts that send vulgar or fake information.

The platform will delete posts that contain vulgar or fake information and punish the account owner, while for accounts that continue to send such information after being punished, or maliciously confront the platform's decisions will be shut down permanently, according to a notice released by WeChat.

Netizens showed their support for WeChat's decision by leaving comments with thumbs-up emoticons.

The notice said that since WeChat started cleaning vulgar content on the platform in 2015, many public accounts are still sending messages with illegal content, some of which even "used technical means to resist WeChat's requests for correction."
