The Olympic Games will signal a new direction for Brazil through their virtues of peace and unity, Rio 2016 organizing committee president Carlos Nuzman said on Friday.

In a speech during the opening ceremony at the Maracana stadium, Nuzman said the Olympic spirit could help the country overcome its economic and political problems.

"We are turning our dream into reality," Nuzman said to loud cheers. "The best place in the world is here, now. Rio and Brazil welcomes the world with open arms. I am the proudest man alive. I'm proud of my city, my country.

"These are your Games, the first in South America. We are taking the Olympics to new parts of the world. Today we are taking a new direction. We have worked for seven years for this. Rio is proud to be the Olympic capital of the world.

"Thanks to all volunteers. Always believe in your dreams. This is a dream. It's now a reality. We didn't give up our strengths. We have never given up. It will send a message of peace and unity to all Brazilians. Rio is ready to make history.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said: "These Games will go from Brazil to the world. In just seven years you have achieved what generations could only dream of. You have changed Rio into a modern metropolis and made it even more beautiful.

"Our admiration for you is even greater. Because you managed this at a very difficult time in Brazilian history. We have always believed in you."

Bach gave special praise to the Olympic refugee team, who he said "exemplified the Olympic spirit", by overcoming "great adversity".
