A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Tuesday said that the international community needs to expedite its actions in order to attain all the goals related to gender equality by 2030.

Globalization and the information age have created new challenges for women, while regional conflicts and refugee and migration crisis have worsened their living environment, said Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, at a meeting of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.

"Countries must formulate more scientific and rational development strategies which adequately take into account women's special needs and ensure an equal share of development gains for women," he said.

The Chinese diplomat stressed the importance of actively safeguarding women's rights and interests, enhancing women's capacity to take part in political and economic activities, and improving their involvement in decision-making and management.

He also reviewed China's contributions in advancing gender equality worldwide.

"China co-hosted with UN the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment on Sept. 27," he said. "The Meeting reaffirmed the historical standing and present-day relevance of the Beijing Conference and agreed unanimously to accelerate actions to implement the women-related goals in the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development."

At the meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping took the lead in committing China's support for the global cause of women: China will donate 10 million dollars to UN Women, implement in developing countries a total of 100 Maternal and Child Health projects and 100 Happy School Campus projects, and provide training for 130,000 women from developing countries, said Wang. "These pledges embody my government's great attention to and vigorous support for the global cause of women."

On the national efforts of China, Wang said that the Chinese government "has taken multiple policy measures in economic, legal and administrative areas together with the mobilization of public opinion, with a view to safeguarding women's legitimate rights and interests and promoting their all-round development."

China has attained all MDG targets related to women, Wang declared. According to him, the Chinese government in September published a white paper on Gender Equality and Women's Development in China, which gave a comprehensive presentation on the achievements in the cause of Chinese women over the past 20 years.

"My government will honor its commitments to supporting women's development in other developing countries, in a bid to contribute to the realization of women-related goals and targets under the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development," he said.
