A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Tuesday urged Japanto back a proposal made by Republic of Korea (ROK) President Park Geun-hye for the two countries and China to compile history textbooks together.

"Asian countries such as China and the ROK are the victims of the invasion and colonization by Japanese militarists," spokesman Hong Lei said while commenting on the proposal, which was made by the ROK president on Nov. 14.

"Japan should face up to the appeal of its Asian neighbors, and reflect on the historical crimes committed by the Japanese militarists," Hong said.

Only when history is faced up to, can a better future be created, he said.

Hong added that he hoped Japan would consider the proposal and show sincerity on the issue.
