A seminar was held in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the construction of a new type of relationship between China and the United States.

Jimmy Carter, former US president, Li Xiaolin, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and Xu Kuangdi, chairman of the China-US People's Friendship Association, addressed the event.

Carter said that as an "old friend" of the Chinese people, he will continue to give impetus to friendly cooperation and exchanges between the two important countries and promote the development of bilateral ties.

Li said there is no fixed model for Sino-US relations.

"The future of Sino-US relations depends on mutual exploration and theoretical innovations," Li said.

Xu thanked Carter for the contributions he has made to bilateral ties. He also said constructing a new type of Sino-US relationship that features mutual benefit and mutual respect is in the common interests of both sides.

The seminar was jointly hosted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the International Data Group.

US Ambassador to China Gary Locke was among the 120 participants who attended the event.
