Sino-US cooperation in science, technology mutually beneficial

Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that Sino-U.S cooperation in science and technology benefits the two countries and the world as a whole.

Hu made the remarks in a congratulatory letter to the opening ceremony of the 14th meeting of the Sino-U.S. Joint Commission on Science and Technology Cooperation on Tuesday, noting that such cooperation will boost scientific development not only for the two sides but also for the world.

Hu said that China and the U.S. all pay high attention to scientific and technological innovation and actively promote cooperation in this field, which has become a significant impetus for the development of Sino-U.S. relation as well as cultural communication.

Bilateral scientific and technological cooperation will achieve greater success with the efforts of the two sides and contribute significantly to the construction of Sino-U.S. win-win partnership of mutual respect and mutual benefits, Hu said.

In his letter, Hu also extended greetings to Chinese and U.S. scientists dedicated to promoting Sino-US scientific and technological cooperation and expressed thanks to all those who have contributed to promoting the development of Sino-U.S. relations.

The Sino-U.S. Joint Commission on Science and Technology Cooperation is an organization established between the governments of China and the U.S. It will meet every two years in China and the US alternately.

At this year's meeting, the commission reviewed fruits achieved since the last meeting, carried out discussions on agriculture, energy, nuclear safety, health, basic science, environment, metrological science and technology, bio-diversity and remote sensing technology for disaster management.

The meeting also witnessed the establishment of work groups for cooperation in certain fields, the signing of documents such as a protocol

on flagship projects in agricultural research and a memorandum on international scientific and technological partnership program.
