Wang Huiling teaches students in Yuhuangmiao Elementary School at the foot of a mountain in Xinzheng City, Central China’s Henan Province. The remote school serves nearly 600 boarding students from villages located in mountains. It has 25 teachers, 18 them over 50 years old, and now faces a shortage of younger teachers, according to school headmaster Zhu Dongwei. Wang teaches math to fifth-graders and music for other two classes. Like a mother, Wang also cares for the students, repairing their clothes or bedsheets. The family of Wang’s husband runs a company with an annual income of 1 million yuan ($153,000) and once asked her to help look after the business as an accountant. But she insisted on the much less-paid teaching job, continuing for 17 years out of her deep compassion for disadvantaged children usually separated from their parents working in cities. Wang’s dedication has won her a number of awards and honors, including the city’s Teacher of The Year 2017, and she was also elected as a deputy to the city’s People’s Congress, the local legislature, in March.
