Shandong province currently has about 1.74 million hectares of wetland, comprising 11.09 percent of its total area, and five percent of China's total wetland habitats. The wetlands in Shandong fall into five categories: offshore and coastal wetlands, river wetlands, lake wetlands, swamp wetlands and artificial wetlands.
