In mid-April, the draft regulation on zebra crossing safety management in Xiamen Special Economic Zone was submitted to the 12th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 16th Xiamen Municipal People's Congress in east China's Fujian Province.
It will be the first local regulation on zebra crossing safety management in China. Xiamen wants to pass legislation that guides pedestrians not to sit, lie, stay, or browse electronic devices while crossing roads.
According to relevant research, traffic accidents on zebra crossings account for nearly 20% of traffic accidents in Xiamen. There are 2,785 zebra crossings in Xiamen. It has become a top priority to ban pedestrians from using mobile phones on zebra crossings.
It is reported that the "Xiamen Special Economic Zone Zebra Crossing Safety Management Regulation (draft)" is being deliberated. The Xiamen People's Congress Standing Committee said that after the end of the first instance, the opinions of all parties would be combined, and more in-depth investigation and research would be carried on. The draft will be further modified and improved.
