Brent Christensen, the 28-year-old man charged with the kidnap of 26-year-old visiting Chinese scholar Zhang Yingying in the state of Illinois, is set to appear in federal court for a second time set on July 14.
Christensen pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance on Monday, but the judge remanded him without bail.
The second hearing will focus on whether he can obtain a guarantor pending trial.
Christensen could face life in prison if convicted of kidnapping Zhang, who authorities fear may now be dead.
