A grand annual military parade marking Pakistan's Republic Day has for the first time involved Chinese troops.

Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain thanked China for sending a contingent from the People's Liberation Army to take part in the parade.

In a speech in the nation's capital, Islamabad, he described their participation as an "historic opportunity", before hailing the multi-billion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as the great example of their blossoming economic partnership.

Pakistan Day, or Republic Day, is a national holiday to commemorate the day a resolution was passed to demand a separate homeland for the Muslims of the British Indian Empire.
