A China-made underwater glider, Haiyi, has broken the world record for depth of dive. The glider went down to 6,329 meters below sea level, breaking the 6,000-meter mark.

Developed by the Shenyang Automation Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Haiyi dove in the world's deepest known sea trench, the Mariana Trench, in the western Pacific Ocean for over 87 hours and accumulated over 130 kilometers.

The glider has brought back a lot of high-resolution deep-sea data. The Chinese scientific expedition team is still working around the Mariana Trench area and is scheduled to return to southern China's Hainan Province later this month.
