Thailand King Bhumibol Adulyadej has died at the age of 88. The royal palace made the official announcement.

King Bhumibol--who was also known as Rama the 9th--was the longest-reigning monarch in the world, after coming to the Thai throne on June 9th, 1946. During his time on the throne, he witnessed more than 20 military coups and more than 50 cabinet changes in his country.

Bhumibol had suffered from ill health over the last 10 years and spent most of the last five in hospital, where he was briefly discharged this January. He was reported to be suffering from heart disease and breathing difficulties.

Thai prime minister says Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will be the new monarch in accordance with the constitution.
