Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton held their first presidential debate - or better said, a war of words -- on Monday at Hofstra University in New York. China became a hot topic during the heated back-and-forth talks.

Both Trump and Clinton mentioned China twelve times when referring to trade, cybersecurity and nuclear threats. Trump accused China of conducting unfair trade and of taking jobs away from Americans. While Clinton pledged to protect Americans' private and public information from cyberattacks, saying actions must be taken against attacks regardless if they are from "Russia, China, Iran, or anybody else".

The presidential candidates comments have sparked buzz among Chinese netizens. While some Chinese were angered by what the candidates had to say, others were glad to see China playing a larger role during America's election. No matter who wins the election, China will face huge challenges during the next US presidency.

Let's take a listen to some Chinese peoples' reactions to the debate.

"I personally like Trump's character and he feels like a fighter. But from today's performance I think Clinton was more like a mature politician and Trump looked a bit like a misfit on this occasion," said Chinese graduate student Wang Pei.

"I think maybe Trump would be more friendly to China, because China and the US share vast common interests, especially in commercial areas. From the perspective of a businessman, he may have a more friendly approach to China," said Chinese graduate student Ge Mengchao.
