More than 2,000 delegates represent a broad spectrum of Chinese society. They are here to conduct political consultation and exercise democratic supervision.

2016 is the first year of the 13th Five-Year Plan that plays an important role in building a moderately prosperous society. So top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng wants delegates to make the most of the annual session when giving advice.

"With a focus on the implementation of the 13th Five-Year Plan, the progress of the supply-side structural reform and the major tasks of cutting overcapacity and excess inventory; leverage; costs reduction; and strengthening pints of weakness will be put into effect in the 2016 plan of the CPPCC Standing Committee during political consultations,"

"We'll continue to organize inspections and investigative studies, as well as diligently work to bring reports and findings that are both compelling and influential," said Yu.

The areas of particular interest are industrial transformation in three provinces in Northeast China, agriculture technology extension, and land resources utilization.

Yu also looks back on the CPPCC's work last year, and its role in implementing the 13th Five-Year Plan and improving people's livelihood.

"We've resolutely adhered to the principle of serving the public through the performance of our duties and also by ensuring our proposals and labors are in line with the public interest,"

"Also, we've continuously channelled great energy to alleviate poverty in the poor regions as a whole," said Yu.

There are more than 600,000 CPPCC members at all levels across the country. They serve as the bridge between the central authorities and the broad masses of the people.

The top political advisory body hopes to use that connection to help unite the country and reach the goal of building a moderately prosperous society. It further hopes this will in turn bring about a rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
