Police in Jiangxi province have detained three individuals on suspicion of poisoning wild animals in the Poyang Lake wetland area, the Yugan county's public security bureau revealed on Monday.

Authorities received reports from volunteers on Saturday regarding suspected wildlife poisoning at a wetland site within the Poyang Lake basin. In response, a special investigation team was formed in collaboration with forestry authorities to conduct inspections at the locations of the suspected poisoning.

The three suspects, identified only by their surnames — Zhou, aged 57, and two others aged 69 and 50 — have been placed under criminal coercive measures. The case is still under investigation.

Police emphasized that protecting the ecology and wildlife of the Poyang Lake wetland is a shared responsibility and pledged a "zero-tolerance" approach to offenses that harm ecological security.

Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake, serves as one of the most crucial wintering grounds along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway for migratory birds. Each year, numerous migratory birds stop at the lake to rest, feed and survive the winter, making its wetlands vital for conserving global bird populations and maintaining the ecological balance along this international flyway.
