(ECNS) — A fatal traffic accident early Monday on Tianfu Avenue South Section in Chengdu City left one person dead, according to police in southwest China's Sichuan Province. Authorities said the crash involved a drunk driver and the cause remains under investigation.
According to a statement released by the Chengdu Municipal Public Security Bureau's traffic management department, the accident took place at about 3:18 a.m. when a sedan driven by a 31-year-old man surnamed Deng collided with another vehicle traveling in the same direction, crossed the central green belt and caught fire.
Deng died at the scene, and both vehicles sustained damage.
Preliminary tests showed that Deng had been driving under the influence of alcohol.
Several witnesses said they stopped to help and tried to break the car windows but couldn't open the doors. A driver surnamed Yuan told local media the doors appeared intact but were jammed shut. He said he and others attempted to pry them open and used fire extinguishers after hearing small explosions from the rear of the vehicle, but the fire intensified before rescuers could reach the driver.
Footage circulating online showed the car traveling at high speed before veering off course and bursting into flames. Some witnesses said the vehicle had shown abnormal movement moments before the crash. Emergency responders, including police, firefighters and medical teams, arrived promptly on the scene.
