A 13-year-old boy in East China who drank three 100-milliliter bottles of liquor after his girlfriend broke up with him has recovered from alcohol poisoning that put him in a coma, according to a video posted on Sina Weibo.

The boy in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, ended up in hospital after drinking the booze and then playing basketball to overcome the despair of being rejected by his girlfriend. The report didn't say how long the young couple had been seeing each other.

Zhang Siquan, a doctor in the emergency department of Hangzhou's Xixi Hospital, said that the boy fainted and had a nose bleed during a game of basketball with friends.

The boy was given first aid and rushed to the hospital.

"Health complications can easily occur if you play sports after drinking too much alcohol," Zhang said.

"The boy hasn't yet learned to cope with the negative emotions and pressures that are caused by a romantic breakup," said Song Jiannan, an expert in adolescent psychology in Hangzhou.

The boy has recovered from his bout of acute alcohol poisoning, the video report said.

Public schools in China strictly forbid students from becoming romantically involved and netizens were surprised that a 13-year-old had a girlfriend.

"If he has a girlfriend, he's obviously not spending enough time on his homework," net user Cat_jies commented.
