Serving civil servants of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government will be required to take an oath of allegiance to the HKSAR Basic Law and the HKSAR or sign such a declaration in late December or early January, an official said on Sunday.

Patrick Nip, Secretary for the Civil Service of the HKSAR government, said upholding the HKSAR Basic Law, and being loyal to the HKSAR and accountable to the HKSAR government are the basic responsibilities and conditions of civil servants.

Article 6 of the national security law in Hong Kong stipulates that a resident of the HKSAR who stands for election or assumes public office shall confirm in writing or take an oath to uphold the Basic Law of the HKSAR and swear allegiance to the HKSAR in accordance with the law.
