American streaming giant Netflix led nominations for the 77th Golden Globe Awards with 34 nods in 25 categories spanning motion picture and television, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Monday.

Netflix dominated nominations in the film categories with 17 nods, thanks to strong showings from comedy-drama film "Marriage Story," epic crime film "The Irishman" and others.

Directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, "Marriage Story" racked up a leading six nods, followed by "The Irishman" and Sony Pictures' "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," with five nods respectively.

Three of the five best motion picture drama nominees are from Netflix, including "Marriage Story," "The Irishman" and biographical drama film "The Two Popes." They will compete for the top prize with Universal Pictures' war drama "1917" and Warner Bros. Pictures' thriller film "Joker."

Sony Pictures landed the second-most nominations in the film categories with a total of eight nods, followed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures with six each.

On the television side, Netflix also turned out a big winner with 17 nominations, a nose ahead of HBO's 15 nods. Netflix's historical drama television series "The Crown" and true-crime series "Unbelievable" won a leading four nods each, tied with HBO's historical period drama television series "Chernobyl."

The 77th Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Jan. 5, 2020.
