Indonesian president names first panda cub born in the country

(ECNS) -- The giant panda Hu Chun, currently living in Indonesia, gave birth to a cub last Thursday at the Taman Safari Zoo in Bogor, Indonesia, which marks the first giant panda cub ever born in the country.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto named the cub "Satrio Wiratama," with the nickname "Rio," meaning a noble knight, brave and virtuous, representing Indonesia's aspirations to promote ecological protection and people-to-people exchanges between China and Indonesia.

Jansen Manansang, founder of Taman Safari Zoo, said the panda cub is in good health. It weighed 228 grams five days after birth and is preliminarily believed to be male.

Manansang said the birth of the cub is not only a pride and honor for Indonesia, but also a symbol of the deepening friendship between the two countries.

In September 2017, the male panda Cai Tao and the female panda Hu Chun from China arrived in Jakarta, warmly welcomed by the Indonesian public, making Indonesia the 16th country in the world to host giant pandas.
