(ECNS) — A recent incident involving a tour guide in Thailand forcing Chinese tourists to go shopping has drawn wide public attention, prompting the Chinese Embassy in Thailand to issue a safety reminder for travelers.
According to videos circulating online, a group of Chinese tourists on a bus was threatened by a Chinese-speaking guide during a tour in Thailand. In the footage, the guide allegedly warned that tourists who refused to shop would "not be able to return to China" or "would not be allowed back on the bus at the duty-free shop." The brash guide even demanded that the recorded video be deleted.
The Chinese Embassy in Thailand said it immediately contacted the Thai Tourist Police Bureau and the Tourism Authority of Thailand to verify the situation after the video went viral.
Thai authorities confirmed that the tour guide involved holds a Chinese passport but lacks the qualification to work as a guide in Thailand. The guide reportedly tried to force tourists to make purchases to earn commissions. The Thai side said it is taking action against the travel agency involved.
The Chinese Embassy stressed that foreign nationals are not permitted to work as tour guides under Thai law. It also reminded Chinese citizens traveling to Thailand to be cautious of "low-cost tours" and to choose reputable, licensed travel agencies offering reasonably priced products.
Travelers are advised to sign formal contracts, safeguard their rights rationally in case of disputes, and preserve relevant evidence. Tourists can call the Thai Tourist Police hotline at 1155 or the embassy's consular protection hotline at 02-245-7010 for assistance if needed.
