(ECNS) -- China's largest photovoltaic-powered car carrier set sail on its maiden voyage from Nansha Port in Guangzhou on Thursday.
Named Yuanhaikou, the vessel is carrying approximately 4,000 vehicles from major Chinese automakers including BYD, Chery, and Geely. More than 90% are new energy vehicles (NEVs), destined for countries like Greece, Turkey, and Tunisia under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The vessel measures 199.9 meters in length, with a gross tonnage of 68,252 metric tons and a displacement of 39,069 metric tons. It is equipped with 12 decks and can transport up to 7,000 standard car units, including commercial vehicles, engineering machinery, and MAFI trailers.
The ship is also outfitted with a smart vegetable-growing container, providing a sustainable supply of fresh produce for crew members during long voyages. Through intelligent control of temperature, humidity, light, and nutrients, the container serves as a "green vegetable garden" at sea, addressing the challenge of fresh food storage for deep-sea shipping.
