(ECNS) -- No. 5 unit of the Maerdang Hydropower Station, China's highest-altitude facility of its kind on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, has successfully completed trial operation and was connected to the grid for power generation in Maqen County, Guoluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province on Monday, according to China Energy Investment Corp.

Situated at an altitude of 3,300 meters, the Maerdang Hydropower Station is China Energy's first integrated clean energy facility to include hydropower, solar power and every storage. It takes advantage of the abundant clean energy in the western parts of China while benefiting the energy-hungry eastern regions.

The station has a total installed capacity of 2.32 million kilowatts, consisting of four hydrogenerators with a capacity of 550,000 kilowatts each, one with a capacity of 120,000 kilowatts, and a supporting 750-kilovolt ultra-high voltage substation.

It is expected to begin full operation by the end of 2024.

Once fully operational, the station will generate more than 7.304 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 8.16 million tons, and sulfur dioxide emissions by 30,400 tons.

It can meet the electricity demand of 1.825 million households with an annual electricity consumption of 4,000 degrees and cut 2.56 million metric tons of standard coal consumption every year.
