(ECNS) -- China firmly opposes the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) clinging to the anachronistic doctrine of security and its keenness to provoke bloc confrontations, creating tensions in Europe and even the Asia Pacific region and the wider world, said Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN).
Zhang Jun made the remarks Thursday at the UN Security Council Briefing on Ukraine.
The Chinese ambassador called for more efforts from the international community to promote a ceasefire to minimize the humanitarian impact of the conflict. He said lessons from the Ukraine crisis are profound and deserve serious reflection.
According to the ambassador, NATO’s repeated eastward expansion after the Cold War has not only failed to make Europe any safer, it also sowed the seeds of conflict.
Contrary to its claim to be a defensive organization, NATO has wantonly launched wars against sovereign countries, causing colossal casualties and humanitarian disasters, said Zhang.
He cited the example of NATO firing a number of precision-guided missiles at the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia on May 7, 1999, which killed three Chinese journalists and injured more than 20 Chinese diplomats.
