(ECNS) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday that the U.S.-Japan defense treaty should not jeopardize regional peace and stability.

Spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a press conference when asked to comment on Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's phone call with Biden on Thursday, during which they mentioned that Article Five of the U.S.-Japan security treaty is applicable to Diaoyu Island.

"Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands are China's inherent territory. The Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan, as a product of the Cold War, should not undermine the interests of any third party, much less jeopardize regional peace and stability," Wang said.
