The U.S. military on Wednesday launched a new space forces unit in South Korea, according to Yonhap news agency.

The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) held a ceremony at the Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, about 70 km south of the capital Seoul, to launch the U.S. Space Forces Korea, a component unit of the USFK.

It is one of the few U.S. Space Force's units to be established outside the U.S. mainland, according to Yonhap. The United States also set up its space forces units under the Indo-Pacific Command and the Central Command last month.

The U.S. Space Forces Korea, led by Lt. Col. Joshua McCullion, added to other USFK component units, including the Eighth Army, the Seventh Air Force, the Naval Forces Korea, the Marine Forces Korea and the Special Operations Command Korea.
