Spain's southern Autonomous Community of Andalusia will become the fourth region in the country to make wearing face masks obligatory both indoors and outdoors, regional leader Juan Manuel Moreno confirmed on Saturday.

The largest autonomous community in Spain will follow the example of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Extremadura in adopting the measure to curb local COVID-19 outbreaks.

At a press conference in the Spanish north-African enclave of Ceuta, Moreno said the measure in Andalusia would probably come into effect on Tuesday, after seeing "the important outbreaks taking place in other parts of Spain" and to "prevent the virus from overrunning us."

He said some local outbreaks were to be expected in Andalusia but asked for people to show "individual responsibility" and to "work together until there is an effective treatment or an efficient vaccine to combat this pandemic."

Spain saw 2,944 new COVID-19 cases from July 3 to July 10, compared to 2,028 during the previous week and 1,758 two weeks ago, according to the country's Health Ministry. Enditem
