Australians are more concerned about coronavirus than ever as restrictions continue to ease across the country, a survey has revealed.

The fifth weekly COVID-19 Monitor survey, which was published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Wednesday, found that 36 percent of respondents surveyed from May 16 to May 20 were very concerned about the pandemic.

It is the highest figure recorded and represents a nine-point increase from 27 percent in the survey taken from May 9 to May 13, which was the lowest figure recorded.

The proportion of those "extremely concerned" about the Australian economy reached a record-high of 23 percent compared to 17 percent in the previous survey.

Sixteen percent of respondents said they were extremely concerned about a friend or family member contracting the virus, up from 11 percent earlier in May.

As at 3:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday, a total of 7,133 cases have been reported in Australia, including 102 deaths and 6,553 have been reported as recovered from COVID-19, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health.

On Wednesday, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said in a press conference that there were 11 new cases in the last 24 hours and there are less than 500 active cases in the country.

According to him, the national death has risen to 103 after a 30-year-old man from Queensland became the youngest victim of the virus in Australia.

The fifth Monitor survey was taken as state and territory governments announced plans to ease their coronavirus restrictions in line with a three-step plan revealed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on May 8.

It was the first time that respondents were asked how they were coping during the pandemic.

Almost 80 percent said they were managing very well but only 41 percent thought Australians in general were coping well.

The survey has found higher levels of loneliness and anxiety among Australians. Enditem
