Head of the team of Chinese medical experts to Zimbabwe Zhu Yimin said on Wednesday he was impressed by the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zhu was speaking at a meeting between the Chinese team and Zimbabwe's Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on COVID-19 held in the capital Harare.

The 12-member team from China's Hunan province arrived in Zimbabwe on Monday with a consignment of medical equipment, and they will share knowledge and experience on fighting COVID-19 with Zimbabwe's frontline health experts.

Zhu, who is also an official of the provincial health commission, said Zimbabwe's strict anti-virus measures have slowed the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

"It is very encouraging to see that Zimbabwean people are in one heart responding to COVID-19 in good faith. Coming here, our team has seen that everyone is wearing masks and hand sanitation has been implemented strictly," he said.

He said while Zimbabwe's strict anti-virus measures are bearing fruit, there is need to strike a balance between coronavirus prevention and economic development in order to save both lives and livelihoods.

Zhu said China was determined to assist Zimbabwe in its fight against COVID-19 as the the two countries celebrate four decades of diplomatic relations.

Speaking on the same occasion, Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun expressed confidence in Zimbabwe's management of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We have faith in the capacity and response of the Zimbabwean government and people regarding COVID-19," Guo said.

He said the containment measures that are implemented by the government have been effective in preventing the spread of the infectious disease.

Since March, Zimbabwe has taken a raft of measures aimed at curtailing the spread of COVID-19, including a national lockdown and outlawing all public gatherings.

The southern African country has so far recorded 37 cases of COVID-19, 12 recoveries and four deaths.

Zimbabwe's Vice President, Kembo Mohadi, who also chairs the Ministerial Taskforce on COVID-19, expressed gratitude to China for its unwavering support to Zimbabwe.

"The government and people of Zimbabwe are filled with joy and immeasurably inspired by your timely visit and by your magnanimity to assist us and to share experiences in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.

Mohadi said the visit by the medical experts will effectively enhance the country's strategy in curbing the spread of COVID-19.

"Zimbabwe and China enjoy excellent long standing relations, and this visit in which you bring much needed medical expertise and knowledge of how best to fight the unprecedented pandemic attesting to the strong bond of resilient friendships and cooperation," Mohadi said. Enditem
